Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt

The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) is a state-recognized university under church sponsorship. It is open to students of all faiths and beliefs. The institution was granted university status on April 1, 1980 by the Bavarian bishops on the basis of the Concordat between the Free State of Bavaria and the Holy See and with the approval of the Congregation for Catholic Education. Its roots can be traced back to the 16th century.

The KU wants to serve the common good by exploring and reacting to challenges faced in politics, economy, culture, religion and the environment. The aspiration for the University is to build bridges between science and society as an engaged University and to make knowledge available for society. The aim is to make a valuable contribution to social coexistence, to the free democratic basic order and to preserving creation.

The KU is strongly committed to the guiding principle of sustainable development. It is the University’s profound belief that sustainability is an integral component in research, teaching and administration – which is why the KU uses available resources responsibly and efficiently. The KU understands sustainable development as a form of development that is balanced on an ecological, economical and sociocultural level and takes global and intergenerational fairness into account.

Voices of
Learning Service

"It's a matter of coherence between the command of the Church and the mission of the University (...) It isn't about being good people, it's about giving an opportunity for better quality of teaching and education. This is strategic. Associate it with the improvement processes"

Chantal Jouannet & Manuel Caire, Universidad Católica de Chile

"It is necessary to start from the recognition that the University doesn't own knowledge, and needs to place the leadership in students and the community with their knowledge and experiences"

Daniela Gargantini, Universidad Católica de Córdoba, Argentina

"Service Learning is not a creation of Catholic Universities but we recognize in this methodology many opportunities to educate students. We see how much students learn about themselves, about the course and about society by being confronted with aspects of social justice. SL is a gift from the outside that we Catholic Universities can use to help us deepen our commitment to social engagement, linked to the Church’s social mission".

Nicolas Standaert, Louvain University, Belgium
