The definition adopted for the concept of university extension is in clear correspondence with the foundations and objectives of the institution in which it is developed, and is strongly influenced by the currents of thought prevailing in a given time and place. Furthermore, this conception will be conclusive in the actions that the university implements in its relationship with the social environment. In order to prepare a document that will serve as a basis for a later characterization and discussion of the different existing conceptions of what is understood as \u201cuniversity extension\u201d, this paper presents a historical review of the development of university extension. From this, some ideas underlying the different conceptions are identified. The importance of extension as a substantive function, which must make rigorous interpretations of social needs in order to project knowledge and provide solutions to specific problems, is pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n

La definici\u00f3n adoptada para el concepto de extensi\u00f3n universitaria est\u00e1 en clara correspondencia con los fundamentos y objetivos de la Instituci\u00f3n en la cual se desarrolle, y se encuentra fuertemente influenciada por las corrientes de pensamiento que imperan en una determinada \u00e9poca y lugar. Adem\u00e1s, esta concepci\u00f3n ser\u00e1 concluyente en las acciones que la universidad implemente en su relaci\u00f3n con el medio social. Con el objetivo de confeccionar un documento que sirva de base para posteriormente realizar una caracterizaci\u00f3n y discusi\u00f3n sobre las diferentes concepciones existentes sobre lo que se entiende como \u201cextensi\u00f3n universitaria\u201d, en este trabajo se presenta una revisi\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica del desarrollo de la extensi\u00f3n universitaria. De esta surge la identificaci\u00f3n de algunas ideas subyacentes a las diferentes concepciones. Se se\u00f1ala la importancia de la extensi\u00f3n como funci\u00f3n sustantiva, la cual debe realizar rigurosas interpretaciones de las necesidades sociales, para proyectar saberes y brindar soluciones a problemas espec\u00edficos.<\/span><\/p>\n

La d\u00e9finition adopt\u00e9e pour le concept d’extension universitaire correspond clairement aux fondements et aux objectifs de l’institution dans laquelle il est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9, et est fortement influenc\u00e9e par les courants de pens\u00e9e qui pr\u00e9valent dans un temps et un lieu donn\u00e9s. De plus, cette conception sera d\u00e9terminante dans les actions que l’universit\u00e9 mettra en oeuvre dans ses relations avec l’environnement social. Afin de pr\u00e9parer un document qui servira de base \u00e0 une caract\u00e9risation et \u00e0 une discussion ult\u00e9rieures des diff\u00e9rentes conceptions existantes de ce que l’on entend par \u00ab extension universitaire \u00bb, cet article pr\u00e9sente un examen historique du d\u00e9veloppement de l’extension universitaire. \u00c0 partir de l\u00e0, certaines des id\u00e9es qui sous-tendent les diff\u00e9rentes conceptions sont identifi\u00e9es. Il souligne l’importance de la vulgarisation en tant que fonction substantielle, qui doit proc\u00e9der \u00e0 des interpr\u00e9tations rigoureuses des besoins sociaux afin de projeter des connaissances et d’apporter des solutions \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes sp\u00e9cifiques.
